How a Monk’s Wine Became Scotland’s Most Feared Beverage | Ep. 122
What happens when monks, caffeine, and alcohol collide? Buckfast Tonic Wine has been called "wreck the hoose juice" for a reason, and we’re here to find out why. From its bizarre monastic origins to its unholy connection to Scottish street crime, this stuff has serious lore.
Matt, Jason, and Drew dig into the story behind Buckfast while getting way too excited about glass shards, caffeine-soaked riots, and whether this wine is technically… wine.

Drinking two and a half bottles in one sitting, often instigated violence. Like they had a specific, number? they actually published this like article like once you hit two and a half, you're fucking gonna get in a fight or something. This is arsenic culture. And I am Matt, I'm Jason, I'm Drew. And we're are chilling. very casually. Chilling in the cut, baby. Over at Uh, where are we? Napa House? house. at the one of the party houses and if you're watching instead of listening. you can see that I am way too comfortable in this very plush. This could literally be a bad. Oh, yeah, Two, two. You can sleep to be on you could. fit like Yeah, You could do four. you do like a whole like, orgy on here? oh, I was gonna say, I tried drink enough. I might fall asleep on it. But then you said orange and I'm like, well. Not that couch on your, back. Sleep. yeah, yeah. You wonder why we've been giving you drinks all day. Drew. they got robes here that they let you wear. We know it because we've already been wearing them. but Yeah. Appreciate, uh, Brian and the guys for letting us, uh, record here as usual. Check 'em out at partyhous.com. That's party HOUS. Um, but we have been in vibing and I wanna talk about something. here that is, uh, absolutely nuts. I I can't believe we've never heard of it. This is like, I still can't believe we've never heard of This is one of those, like, there's a few episodes that we've done where it's just kinda like, this is the most insane thing we've ever discussed. I don't wanna say this is the most insane, but like this is right up there. Like how, how is it that this has never come across our attention? I don't know. I mean, I think both of us looking online a decent amount of time. I've never heard of this. Yeah. Not seen anything about till we, till, somehow we found it. Drew, do you search for something like this? I mean, what would looking at, I think just looking at international drinks Or popular international drinks it should pop up, but it does not. doesn't, no, I actually found this using ai. Yeah. Al was just kind of like, find me some obscure topics and it's like, Hey, have you ever heard of Buckfast tonic wine. I a big reason to this not being found too is before like 2019 it, it had different ad campaign or none at all. Until 2019 and it flipped. So it went from this to that like, it went way. different. So that's probably why. Have you ever heard of this? buck fast tonic I've heard of Tonic Wine because we drank it in Jamaica. Yeah. Um, I've not heard of Buck Fast of Buck Fast. Every time We got tonic wine in Jamaica. uh, Jason, we'd be like, Oh, what is this? And they'd be like, Oh yeah, they hold their fist up and they grab it really hard.'cause it's supposed to give you a major I don't, I don't want that Oh, okay. I was thinking, I was thinking going, you know, Yeah. Um, and So is, what the hell is Buck? so, okay, let me, let me start out, let me, let me intro this. for you, Andrew. And, uh, we're gonna get into it in, can't wait. 10 18. That was a weird date to say. The year 1 0 1 8. Okay. 10 18. Um, before the Battle of Hastings, which was in 10 66, for all you history nerds, the fuck you knew that? I don't know. Uh, you need to drink more. So you, was a store I used to go to in Richmond. That's all, that's all I know about Uh, I knew a girl, with that last name. I, I just wanna contribute, to your all's story. uh, the Buck Fast Abey Was, uh, established in Devon, England, and um, they actually dissolved in 1539. They were reestablished in 1882. They went through a bunch of like, uh, changes in stuff, but in order to, um, stay open, they established this stuff called Buck. Fast Tonic Wine. Um, it's just a sidebar here. Are you Familiar with Henry vii? Yes. Yeah. I didn't know much about, him. I just know that apparently he's an asshole. he behead his wives or something? multiple, multiple wives? He was actually the one that originally, Um, I think he's the one that shut down the original Abey before it was reopened. Um, because so it would've been in the 15 wanted their money. and that's apparently what he, I just like read up like a little bit on him, I'm pretty sure Kings did what they wanted. That dude's a motherfucker like, He like left the church and started his own church so he could be the head of the church and then he like used that to like divorce his wife. Is he in another wife. Yeah, I think he invented Scientology. Yeah. Yeah. They called him, uh, he, Cruise. Don't come after me, baby Don't come after me. Henry Cruz the eighth. but anyway, so they, they developed the a, the monks at this Abbey at the Buckfast Abbey developed this tonic wine to kind of help pay for bills and stuff like that. um, Sure. So they, That's what they want you to believe. what they want you to believe. But you know what this is like, it's like the, uh, the, the, the monks at, um, the, the beer. yeah, The, what do you call 'em? um, Fucking Flemish. How the fuck? Can we not think of Belgian, Uh, I'm I'm, I'm looking at the bottle in my mind. Yeah. Trappist Oh, traps. Yeah. Trap as tales. Oh, so it's, this reminds me of like the Trappist monks. Um, they would basically brew beer and sell it to the public to pay for their bills and expenses. and stuff like that. Um, in 1897, a nephew of a French monk brought a recipe for this tonic wine to the Abbey. It was a take on something called French Ella. You ever heard of Micella? M-I-S-T-E-L-L-A? Uh, Micella was a fortified wine. Um, this is how they made it. This is, this is the most janky shit I've ever, heard of. um, they took already distilled alcohol like brandy, it usually was brandy.'cause brandy is basically distilled wine. And then they just added grape juice to it. So it was just like, we got the strength or close to the strength of brandy, but now you can't fucking taste it. And they called this medicinal. like you cut your, when you cut your stuff with, uh, baking soda or whatever, right. Or Or flour or gold. Gold medal flour. Yeah, Or cut your drinks to Mountain Dew, with cocaine. opium back in the day. day. Yeah. Yeah. Um, but, uh, yeah, so like, this was actually a style of of wine. It was called Masella. And the monks adapted this, they took that recipe and then they added caffeine phosphates, which is like an emulsifier to get everything, to mixed together, uh, and vanilla. And this is what supposedly quote unquote gave its medicinal property. properties. very Yeah, I'm thinking they're just like, it fucking gets you buzzed and hyped and also like brings it down at the same time. So, uh, that could qualify as medicine and they, they just ran with did you see how much caffeine is in there? I actually looked this up. Yeah. Tell Really. So it contains as much caffeine as. eight cans of Soda That's in one, one liter bottle. That's a lot. Yeah. Well, and that's a liter bottle, How, how, would be like, yeah. could they concentrate caffeine that much in the late 18 hundreds? Uh, Great question. Well, they also like Ana, you said in there too or something else Uh, well, four Loco does, um, which speaking of, I brought us a four Loco to, uh, enjoy.'cause there are quite a bit of parallels with, uh, the original four Loco, unfortunately. This is not the original that got the bullshit version. is the bullshit version. What do you have? Oh, Oh, I got the thing baby. baby. Do you So, sitting here. Jason's been telling I won't tell him. I won't tell him. So this is fortified wine, right? So fortified wine is buckfast With caffeine. They don't have four local caffeine anymore. So I went on, on the manhunt today in Lexington, Kentucky. I'm actually disappointed in a lot of liquor stores here. Uh, we don't clearly don't have as many good winos in town because I couldn't find what I wanted, but I found it. at one place. I've got Wild Irish Rose baby. What the fuck is that? This is Richard's Wild Irish Rose. Oh, It's it's a fortified wine, which we will try. Okay, Okay. I've never even heard of that doesn't have any caffeine in it. So I'm kind of like, you know, what do you do? what do you do? Well, you can't, oh, ground one Red Bull. Red Bull baby. Oh be mixing this nice little cocktail for us. to, uh, to replicate what I think Buckfast would Fuck. And let's mix some with the Four Loco too, While we're at it, we no, We're just going, we don't, you Just gonna do it Wild Irish Trails is a fine spirits. What? I've never even heard of 4 99. Like that tells you how good. so? it, I remember growing up. Like it was like Mad Dog 2020. mad dog in that, in that container right I'm sure there's more sugar in this than the mountain de can. Oh, Jesus Oh, Jesus Christ. God. It smells like Mad Alright, well pour it out and I'll, I'll keep talking over here. Oh, yeah. Until 1927, The Buckfast tonic wine was sold directly by the monks. out of their monastery. Um, it, they didn't actually have a shitload of sales. a heavy poor It was considered like more of a novelty. Um. But they ended up losing their liquor license so they couldn't sell it anymore, which is such like a macro thing to like they a monks, You can't trust yeah, I why did, how did they lose their liquor license? I looked it up And it was just like, it was a combination of like very, like stupid, things. like some guy forgot to fill out a form or something like that. It was like, it was that. innocuous. It was so stupid. I was just like, I don't even fucking care about that. But what they ended up doing is they teamed up with a distributor, JH handling company, and this company was gonna handle their distribution and sales across the united, Kingdom. Um, it went from a limited niche sales straight out of the, the Abbey to, uh, widespread distro overnight. Um, the recipe ended up being tweaked a little bit to make it, uh, I guess to make it more, um, commercially viable. But they literally called it medicine before. There are obviously a lot of stipulations that come with the word medicine. Um, so, uh, they ended up, I forget what they, here, hold on. I got it right here. is it kind of like what they did in prohibition here, where they were like, oh, this is whiskey, but it's Not, Not even, so like, they literally called it add a added botanicals or some top, like they had a little, few little additives to it. so what they, did was they just changed the. The the nomenclature, they went from medicine to quote unquote medicated wine, which is like saying something has natural flavors that doesn't actually mean shit. It just sounds good. I think Wild Irish rose has natural flavors. Oh, 100%. and you know, it's good because it's a screw top. Yeah. So after you've had, four, it's you can reopen it and have five. I I feel like I knew a girl who was Irish, who was name was Rose and she was wilder than that. See that's, that's Pretty sure it's named after a wild road. He knew her. Richard knew her. Uh, But yeah, medicated wine doesn't mean shit. So they basically made it up to make it sound like medicine, so that way they could put whatever they want in it. And they ended up not putting vanilla in it anymore. They used vanilla Inn, Which is like a synthetic compound. Which goes back to what you were saying drew about, like how did they figure out how to come up with all these ingredients? It's like an extract from like pine cones and like, like industrial waste runoff. It's fucking weird. And they make it taste like. vanilla. Yeah. Sounds good. So they said, they said it actually tasted like, did you see what it tasted like Buckfast? Well, what does it say? Fruit bubble gum. And the reason I bring that up right now is you just had a sip of that too. I kinda get some fruit bubble gumm on this one. No shit. can also see why Winos would drink this, because 4 99, Yeah. Yeah, We did, we did doctor. it Yeah. I can't really tell what the difference is is. Yeah. I'm actually getting a lot of Red Bull in there. I didn't put much Red Bull. Like probably ounce and a Red Bull has a very distinct. flavor though. Like you here. Has a very distinct Pour me just a little bit of that. I think you can just take it outta the bottle if you want. to. You don't, you don't have to Pour it in a too high class for that. Do you wanna put your robe have, we should have a uh, We should have a brown bag. I'm sorry. Just pass it around. Oh, for 4 99 or whatever. I feel like I can understand why. What's the A BV on that? 14 or I believe. I feel like 17. yeah. What we're doing right now, I feel like we should be doing this episode around to like a barrel with fire coming out of it and just like throwing trash in it at nighttime. warming our hands with MITs, with the, with mittens, with the fingers cut out. Fingers gone. We're all like, have like the same coat on that we. have had for like we just keep, we just keep busing together. I got my shopping card in the background. straight to hell. We're going straight Oh God. though. I mean, I can understand why. Well, I'm sort of surprised that maybe people, this is not funny. Maybe people who, um, would be inclined to drink something that is very inexpensive because they don't have a lot of money. Right. Um, I feel like they would gravitate toward that, but. What else is in that market that tastes like that, that's that inexpensive, you know, I mean if you look at that too, I mean be just being honest. People could sip on that all. day. Like, it's so sweet. It's like, it's like keeping a mountain dew in your hand all day. You to alcohol. It's like taking Concord grape. juices, like taking Welchs and Putting some fucking general in it. Yeah, you wouldn't taste that's, yeah, Exactly. uh, I'll hand it off to your part here, Jason, but before I do, um, I thought this was fascinating. You can still get, uh, buckfast tonic wine today. Yeah. When I started this like saying like, let's do this episode. I didn't even realize this was still available. This is what boggles my mind is that you can actually get this shit like right now. Like the fact that this hasn't been banned from what Jason's getting ready to tell us, um, is absolutely insane. Well, I'll see my family is coming over here, uh, to the States in month and a half. from, I'm going to. Put in a little message and see if we can't get some of this Hell yeah. Yeah, might not Know it by Buck Fast though, 'cause it goes by Bucky. Why Oh, I bet They do know about it. also goes, well, I mean, they, they go a lot of nicknames. It also goes by Rec, The hos Wreck the He Juice. We're gonna wreck this Hoose so we drink of this shit. You gotta, you gotta say it. You gotta say it. like Wreck The Hoose Wreck. Thehe. Juice. Commo, commotion, lotion might be my favorite. actually. commotion lotion. This lube is up. for a good Li Liquid Speed is another one. And then bottle of Fight the World, Those are some of the dick names I, we, that needs to be like a legit name. That needs to be like in their I like, that. And you know, you know what the unofficial slogan of Buck Fast. is? Buck Fast gets you fucked fast. no way that's I swear. I Swear. It's online. That is online. Yes, I mean that's very, that's a very British Yeah, Yeah. Yeah. So popularity where, it, where it got started at. Was in Scotland and Northern Ireland. It, it was in the working class area. So lower, lower income. Of course, it's associated with late night violent crimes. Hooligans, Shockingly, right? shockingly, Um, when you look at it too, in 2010, there was a BBC investigation that said Buckfast had been mentioned in over 5,000 crime reports in one region of Scotland between 2006, and 2009, an average of. three per day. That's fucking That's Insane. And, and, uh, uh, you say in Scotland. In Scotland, there's not, I mean, the population of Scotland is not That's gotta be that's gotta be crazy I capita. Yeah, that's a lot. And it's done by the same 12 people. It's like like the same guy It's like Francis Over, and over again. Now even, even wilder than that. So it from 2008, 2012, buck Fast was mentioned, an average on of 2,900 crimes. A. year In straddle. that is like West Central Scotland, Glasgow kind of area, is what it says. that's about eight per day. Like good people were loaded on this ship. 58% of the perpetrators were between the ages of 16 and 25. So it makes sense, right? I mean, this tastes bunch of Hogans. Yeah, it tastes good though too. Like 17% isn't actually not bad, Especially if I'm like 18 years old. Yeah, I'm gonna fucking, chug the shit outta this. the caffeine. Amount, is it similar to what it was back then? So there's, there's, I don't know if it's even changed. I think It's exactly It's the oh my God, right now, like the current versions, there's actually two versions of this. Um, there's the green bottle version, which is in the, it just like UK wide, 15%, uh, alcohol, 37 and a half milligrams per 100 milliliters of caffeine. Um, and then there's the, uh, what's the other one? The I think it's just the regular a brown. Yeah. Then the The brown ones are, Wait, no, that's that is. the regular One. the brown one is the Irish version and it is 14.8% and 55 milligrams of caffeine per Per 100. Yeah. So that's even more, but it's actually lower a BV, but higher caffeine. Yeah. Yeah. It's absolutely insane. It's like heart attack in a bottle. Oh, for sure. That's why a Four Loco was was banned, right? I mean, yeah. They ended up doing some, uh, research, like the police departments and stuff, Did some research on, um, crimes and, uh, buckfast and they said in 2016, drinking two and a half bottles in one sitting, often instigated violence. Like they had a specific, number? they actually published this like article like once you hit two and a half, you're fucking gonna get in a fight or something. Like that's hilarious. on that note, in 2015, the survey of Scottish Prisons. Prisons, how many, what percent of inmates do you think consumed buckfast before their last Ask him, Because I already know. 50% close 43. 43, 40 3%. Almost half. Almost half The people were in there who were in prison. Their last defense that got'em there, they were drinking. bug Isn't that hilarious. I mean, you think about it though, it's a speedball, all right? So you get, you get a downer in alcohol, you get the upper in the caffeine, like you're just bouncing. I mean, that's what, it's what killed a lot of, celebrities, right As, as progressive as those not mainland European countries are like. in the uk. You would think after a couple years of this shit, they'd have been like, we are banning this. Like, you're never doing this again. No. So let it rip. They kept coming back to the Abbey and they're like, what do you have to say? Save, freight, save for this. And they said the same thing every single time. Like every single time they were asked about it, they're like it's not our fault. Which is pretty true. They're like, they're like, we made this for a purpose. can handle our Bucky. Basically. Yeah. They're like, we made this for a reason. These hooligans, these NEDs, as they call 'em, like Eeds and NED, gangs. Yeah. These, these neg delinquent, delinquents. Oh, non-educated delinquents. They're using it for a different purpose. They're abusing it. That's not our fault. And people were basically like, okay, you got a point. Which I mean, they kind of do, but at the same time, like it's like you said, you're like, I guess a regulatory commission should have been like, okay. But at the same time, you know, let's, this is almost like you need to have a, you need to have that license check like ephedrine, like If you're getting a pseu toed. yeah. Like, hey, You can only buy so many. You know what I mean? Like Yeah. It's like we know what you're gonna do with this. We're checking your license. You get, you get two is the per month. That's it. That's all you get. Yeah. You gotta a prescription for stretch that shit out. like, oh, you're gonna commit a crime, aren't That's fucking hilarious. Is it my partner here? now? So predictive. That's other Thing about it is like their distribution strategy, they really didn't have any ad campaigns back then. We're talking in the two thousands back, um, it is only mainly word of mouth and then like. Loyalists going around and saying, Hey, the people in the corner drinking it. Hey, you need some Bucky. They were always calling it Bucky's. Pretty much the most common. But there was no ad campaign at all. It's like wild Irish road. You've never heard of it. Right. have. no. But also you don't need an ad campaign. No, no, no. Because like I got in a fight with a guy last night. and I was like, what the fuck are you on? He's like, buck. fast. I'm like, Okay. I'm gonna find, I'm look beat my ass. I'm coming back next time. Yeah. Like, I'm gonna do three and a half of those and then, you try me now, bitch. you know, um, are the bottles? honestly, I think they come in liter bottles is what I was looking How many milliliters? Okay. See, I saw, I saw 750, so a liter would be a would be 1,000 milliliter bottles. it'd be, it'd be a thousand milliliters. I saw somewhere. I thought I saw seven fifties. Well, they might, have changed to that, but I mean when I look at this 0.5, Yeah. Yeah. But multiply that by 55 milligrams of caffeine. not, they're not little 12 ounce cans. like, they're like, they're daddy, big daddy bottles. Can you, I mean, so imagine 550 milligrams of caffeine, caffeine. like what's, what's in the, 15% and 15% alcohol on top of Damn, what's in a Red Bull? One 10 or something like that? Two 20, uh, 200, I don't know. 80, 80. milligrams. God. Wow. That's per serving size, which is one. So that's, that's the can That's low from what I was thinking. Shit. We don't even have the kick. We should have got more. So multiply that by, multiply that by Yeah. We should have taken caffeine pills and like ground 'em up, like Jesse Spano. and just like, Hit those, yellow jackets. From Save. on the Bell. studying. I'm studying. Oh yeah. there's not not enough time. There's enough time. not enough time. Fucking that was a great episode. pills and doing wild Irish rose shots. Oh my God. Just so we get our fucking homework done. God damn. the monks are like, we get so much work done after one of these. Yeah. It's not our fault. if Everybody else is, abusing super productive for three days then we're We can't do anything for a month. Why? Yeah. Yeah. Just ignore the nosebleeds. Uh, Uh, in December, 2016, sheriff Alistair Brown publicly stated there was a very definite association between buck, fast and violence. Uh, fueling calls for tighter controls. Um, subsequent pro proposals emerged to bang glass bottles because they would break them and stab a weapon. Yeah, yeah. hell yeah. enforce bottle tracking systems. um, Uh, To kind of keep track. And I Did you just say that about like, or no. I think we talked I was just kidding around with it. Yeah, yeah, And even as early as 2016, uh, Scottish Labor, MSP, I don't know, something like that. Dr. Richard Simpson, he actually proposed, um, licensing, licensing and limits for, for caffeine in beverages and I alcohol beverages specifically. Um, it never really, they never really, they didn't do that though, which is mind boggling. So I wanted to bring the four local here and let's, open that and, You can add some Red Bull to it too if you want to. Seriously. Yeah, pass that around. Um, I've not had any caffeine in about two years. It's gonna really hit me. hard. I forgot. Are you still not doing No. No caffeine. No God damn. All right. This is the guy that's gonna start the going out after guys. Get get my bottle of wild roast. that's certified that's certified that means. Read the ingredients on the back of that. all the reds one through 80. the ingredients are premium malt, beverage with artificial flavors, sucralose, and certified color. You know what a certified color is? Jason? That's it that's it. That's it. That is certified. Um, so in 2005, that is when Four Loco was invented, the original Four Loco. It was made by a bunch of Ohio State grads who wanted to combine alcohol. was before. that. Was it really Just 2005. I mean, I believe you. I yeah, they wanted to combine alcohol, caffeine, guana, and touring to give you like an energy boost. Yeah. And give you like a buzz. Um, in 2008, 2009, it really took off on campuses. Same thing with bug Fast, like it was word of mouth. It was just like, hey, y'all heard a four Loco? They call it Four Loco because those four main ingredients or you can say there. There was also a drink back in right about the time that I I hope You're gonna say the same one I've got that I could legally buy alcohol. And I remember it was like an, I feel, I feel like it was orange flavored, Okay. carbonated. wasn't Mad Dog 2020, no. carbonated. And it was like five or 6% alcohol. Again, malt beverage base. Um, but it had like a hundred milligrams of caffeine in it. And you could buy it in cans at gas stations or whatever. Um, well the big, the big one I remember was in 2005 too. We were actually In New Orleans, my wife and I, Angie. We were down there, I think we were down there for, um, close to Halloween. So New Orleans, a Halloween time, It's pretty wild and wilder than normal. So we're walking around the streets and Budweiser was coming out with this energy drink called E or Budweiser E or extra. I, don't know if I remember So I remember So I remember, hearing about it. So it's a slim can, lock that Red Bull, maybe a little bit bigger, but it's red with like a Budweiser with a big B and then an E after. it with extra. So it was, it was essentially four Locos. So it had Guana Sen caffeine. Okay. And I remember going down there and I saw some guy in New Orleans walking down the street with one A can. I'm like, dude, where'd you get that? He goes, well, I'm a distributor, but they're having an event at this place called The Dungeon. Literally downstairs and the dungeon tonight. They're gonna have some. I'm like, how do I go? He goes, well just go over there and tell him Jim, sent you. I'm like, okay, knock on the door. Look for the guy with a leather mask Tell him to unzip his face. legit did. So me and Angie walked there, walked down there, hey, in the dungeon. They're like, oh, what? We're like, well, Jim told us to come by for Budweiser. Come on in. So we walk in. We're the only two people in the club. Small club in the dungeon. Everybody else is dressed up. We have no like high Halloween costume. So we get, we get the owner comes out there, which we didn't know at the time, talking. To us. He's like, I love your accents. Where are you from? He goes, you gotta come sit with me. So we're in like the VIP. are you fucking I'm not kidding. It was a great Breatha County. He's like, I love, I love your accents. I'm like, oh, we didn't pay for a drink or nothing. I'm like, this is Hell yeah, man. never got the damn Budweiser. Oh my God. I it later and it was absolutely awful. I think it lasted about a year. Really? Yeah. That's still a really cool story though. That's fucking hilarious. I never heard of that. Budweiser Eat. heard. out for more than a couple years. Well, we got distro here. You know, I don't remember. I was living in Lexington time. but I can't remember. Well, for Loco took off in 2008, 2009 across, uh, college campuses. It generated $150 million in revenue. By that point. In 2010, there were numerous hospitalizations, which led to colleges banning them on campus. Uh, excuse me. Uh, and then that eventually led to states baiting them altogether. By New November 17th, 2010, the FDA basically said, we've had enough caffeine and alcohol is quote unquote, an unsafe food edition or additive, and they threaten legal action for loco. They're like, you gotta pull it because this is fucking gonna I mean, it's essentially, life as we know it essentially buck fast in the US Maybe. Maybe even that's why I was saying it's, There's a lot of parallels. I didn't interrupt you. No, it was called sparks. Okay. I remember that one. I think It's still around. Actually. Really I think Mountain Do. Didn't Mountain Dew do that. I think Mountain Dew does. it. Maybe don't know. I've not heard of that. Yeah, I'm look that up as we're Um, That's that's the can we still got Mountain Dew Spark, I believe. Hold on. I'm gonna Look No, no, no. I have seen that. That's got alcohol in it. Yes. Damn. In picture Um, well just to round out that story, uh, 2011 is when Four Loco was reformulated. They took out the caffeine, the Guana, the Toine, and it's just alcohol and basically everyone stopped drinking it. So they've tried to remarket it to kind of make it popular. but I don't think it's, I don't think it's working like it had before. in Europe you got 43% of the people in, in jail. on Buck Fast. they said, ah. it's fine. Yeah. In the us like, hell no. Get that outta here. yeah, yeah, you would feel like they'd be like, yeah, we're gonna imprison as many people as possible. Let's turn this shit loose. You know? Yeah, yeah. Exactly. I, I, I, don't wanna get political, but Yes. no, you're good. You're yeah, you're right. So, So, looking at reinvention, so what they did there, and then the legacy of it too, they actually reinvented the whole brand. So remember they didn't have any ad campaigns at first, word of mouth, all that. All of a sudden in 2019, they have a new ad. campaign that launched. There's a big billboards that go up and it says At dinner with your new boss, it has a picture of three people at dinner, like a restaurant in suits with a bottle of buck Fast to the side. So now what they're trying to do is highlight the drinks versatility. So they're making cocktails, gourmet meals with it. You were it. People are cooking with They actually teamed up with a chef Martin Bno. So thinks how you say his name? He's a Michelin star chef, has two Michelin stars. He's actually created dishes that use buck fast as an ingredient. So one of those is an onion. tart taan. I don't know how the hell to say that, but we'll say that's it. So what it is, they use the drink buck fast to reduce into a syrup to glaze the onions. He The reduction is amazing. I mean, it it removes all the alcohol, but Yeah. it retains all of It's like, it's like wine. it's a fortified wine. So it's gonna be a sweeter wine. That sounds great. He also has a triple B. It's a buck fast blue nose. His name Bo Boon. I don't know how the bor. that. That's it. Yeah. just add that in there. what they did is they used Buck fast to replace the burgundy that they used. Yeah. Burgundy. Yeah. The last thing they did, one of the mixed drinks is called a Buck Fast bramble. So it's actually buck fast mixed with Gin Grenadine and lemon juice. could go wrong there? there? They highlighted the brand's origin from a monastery. I'm like, I, I don't, I don't know how it's gonna work. right? And now, now they're actually launching some ready to drink cans. The fact that it went through this evolution and it had put this many people in jail and they're still like, it's fine. You know, I guess in the United States we grow up and it's just like we know that we have to like patrol the people for their own safety. I get it. But kind of not, I don't know.
