Mellow Corn: The Meme That Became a Bourbon Legend | Ep. 146
It’s cheap, it’s bright yellow, and it’s awesome.
In this episode of Arsenic Culture, Matt, Jason, Drew, and Jordan crack open a bottle of Mellow Corn, the legendary bottom-shelf whiskey that’s managed to earn cult status. We talk about its wild history, Heaven Hill roots, and why some bourbon nerds defend this $15 bottle like it’s Pappy.
Is Mellow Corn actually good, or just good for the price?

Recommend always keeping a ball of that on there. Shit. I mean, that's pretty good. Yeah. It gives you a street edge to your uh, whiskey collection. Oh, This guy. has mellow corn edge. Street edge. Yeah. edge. Welcome back to Arsenic Culture. I'm Matt. I'm Jason. I'm Drew. I'm Jordan. This is very confusing. it's, I don't know who to look at I didn't know who to look at. I feel like that Spiderman me where everybody point everybody. pointing to everybody. everybody. I'm like, I'm in this camera, but I'm also over I nailed it. I know I did. You did, you did see very much all of, yeah, we got a, we got a new camera in our setup and we got four people. We need to start just doing four people all the time because um, what is better than four people talking at the exact same time and everybody not being able to understand. what's five people talking at the same That is probably even better. Yeah. a few in my head too that are always talking. Do they Count. Yeah. So how's everybody doing, Jordan? How are you? Pretty good. I'm ready to start drinking. No. No, no, no. we're just gonna, We're gonna talk about drinking for the next two hours, uh, but, uh, got a bottle share coming close too pretty soon. Yeah. So we're actually at your house. now for the first time and, uh, we're gonna have some people over and have a good time. So appreciate you guys. Come over to Jason's house. Yeah, come on over. You'll be two weeks too, too late. But So we're gonna be opening some really good stuff. We're gonna be doing an episode after this one, uh, opening some super special stuff. Uh, During our bottle share, we get into some pretty crazy pores. Uh, Right now we're going to get into something cheap as hell And, uh, but still pretty good. honestly, Uh, it's a little something called Mellow Corn. I'm sure you've seen it if you haven't had it or heard of it, but, um, it's been around for I think about 520 years. Um, it's, it's, it's a mainstay with Americans with America. But, um, it's, I mean, it's kind of has, um, this history of just being a shit product, bottom shelf, but it's making a comeback like It is right now. Like Yeah, I think it's this bartender's the handshake, right? So if you go, it's like the rumpel MITs kinda shot if you go there. Same with this, like people yeah. Well it it kind of feels Like you remember when, um, craft beer kind of took off and people were just like anti macro everything. Yep. But people still liked PBR. Yep. It's like PBR is like the darling. Meor is kind of like the PBR of the bourbon world now. Agree. Agreed. No, I totally agree on that. Give us a little history on, uh, this delicious dish. while I'm doing that, I'm gonna let you open it. We'll take a little pour. So Mellow Corn wanna just pass the bottle around. just chug straight out of do that if you'd like. down. Yeah. So Meor was actually created in 1945. By the Medley Distilling Company out of Owensboro. Um, then it was Qui acquired in 1993 by Heaven Hill. Okay. They also got the old Fitz brand at the same time. So it's been a Heaven Hill product since 93. Their mash bill on this. So one thing people talk about with mellow corn, it's a corn whiskey, right? So it's not a bourbon. Exactly. So Jordan, me and you talking about this a minute ago, can you want tell him what the, what the difference is there? Well, by all means, uh, everything that I know, me or corn whiskey, you don't have to use first. Uh, use Oak Barrel. That's right. So you can use a second. Use Oak Barrel and what that does, you see this is a little lighter in color if you're watching this on YouTube, that's why. So a second, use barrel in parts, more the grain flavor coming through versus the actual oak. If you use like a first, first char or first used barrel. Right. Um, the one thing about this too though, is, so the mash bill on this is 80% corn, 12% malted barley, 8% rye. So it's not just all corn, right? Heaven Hills bourbon, their flagship recipe is 78% corn, 2% less than than this one. I see. We're recording with Uh, well, I just lost it. 12% malted barley the same. Yeah. And 2% rye. So it's 2% more rye, 2% less corn. Wait, okay. I think Hills bourbon. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's essentially the same, same, same recipe, same thing. Really? Really? Yeah. y'all ever had milli corn before? I have not. I have actually. I have I actually have not. Either You, you would think that would be an easy question to answer. Everybody's having I've never had it before because for the obvious reason, I just, I just pass on. it. I've never, really been. well, you see the yellow and honestly, I'm not here corn on that. I just think it's moonshine. Right? Like that's what I think, so pretty much, Yeah. Did you try It's, it's really good. It's actually, it's actually pretty solid a bad. bourbon. That What you said you've had it before? When was I have have, uh, probably 15 years ago. Yeah. Right? exactly. bar. And this, and it's been around since then, but it's a hundred proof. Right. Hundred proof. Four years old. So it's bottled in bond. I mean, it's a quality product, right? So one of the bottles we love from Heaven Hill, it's, it's discontinued now. They brought it back in a different form. It's those old white labels that had the 6-year-old a hundred proof bald in bond. Oh, yeah. So it's essentially, I mean, it's a great product. I honestly thought this was 100%. corn. I, don't mean I did too. I did when I saw it 'cause I didn't look, look look into, it. I just assumed it was actually just ferment corn. Yeah. You would hardened, looking at it, no, you're fine. I would almost think just by looking at it, that it looks like a Fricking corn on the cob. Now this, I believe is 99% corn, 1% multi barley on this. one, So it's, it's, a little bit different than Jordan's pointing to Hardin's Creek. It's the Golden Origin. So it's their product. So Jim Bean product. There that in focus in there. So again, we talked about this. So bartender's handshake, right? So if you go to a bar like the Rumple mitts ordering something like this, they actually have one called the High and Mellow. So it's Mellow Corn, and then the Miller High Life. So that's like kind of one of their staples there. Okay. Um, another one, another handshakes talked about is mylo, which I, if somebody gave me that, it's like a punch through the Yeah, that'd be like a, as opposed to a handshake. it'd be like a kick in the Yeah, that's a, that's a bitch slap right Yeah. And then Nette. I mean, I, that's about the same. It's a little better than my Lord. you actually don't mind. Nette, do you? The first time I had it, I was actually looking up hangover recipes. Um, 'cause I, I want to, because I was not hungover, I wanna do an episode on hangover recipes, whether they're buckets or whether great a good idea. Yeah. But, um, I would. plan for, it though in advance. yeah. give a big share. yeah. Tonight. Yeah. I tomorrow morning. Yeah. it in the Morning. Um, but I, I came across an article and somebody was swearing by this hangover cure, which like 50% of the hangover cures you see online or hair of the dog. It's like, drink more and you won't be hungover. Well, had no shit Sherlock, because I'm just gonna be drunk again. But this hangover cure was nette, which I had never heard of at the time. This was like five years ago. Um, and, uh, creme Dement. oh God. Oh God. And I think that's it. I think that's it. Um, so I palate pleaser. oh no, I went and bought some, I had uh, I had a bottle of creme Dement from like 15 years ago, which I'm sure it that's, that's a ball that's gonna last you, you ain't going burn through that one. never touched it. Gonna pass that down to Finley in your will. So then I bought a bottle of Fett and I made it, and it was the most God awful thing I'd ever tasted. And then I tried the Fett by itself and I was like, this is even worse. Like, why would anybody drink this? You think of like, um. It's kind of like Jager. You know? it's that real bitter kind of, Uh, but I tried the Hangover cure a few times just for science, purely for science sake, and it didn't work. Um, I would drink two or three of 'em, I get a little buzzed, but I mean, I'm not getting, it didn't stop my hangover, but I kind of acquired a taste for it. It's, it's not bad. And then we had it in, um. Chicago. Chicago, yeah. And it's a big deal Yeah, along with big deal. Probably a bigger deal than the Lord at most bars. We went to, honestly, is it really? Yeah. We went the craft bars, the craft beer and, and Underberg Up there in Chicago too. Yeah. Yeah. I Love that. I've had. nette once and I was at a dinner at County Club for, uh, the brewery. And uh, there was some, uh, if y'all remember, uh, what's that called? or, uh what was that? Kitchen next to Ethereal called? Sit, Smithtown. closed now. Uh, no, no, ethereal. Sorry. It was a middle Middle Fork. Yeah. There was some, uh, chefs from Middle Fork there, and they bought everybody around a f net, like really? As a, as like a shot for everybody to do. it. And I had it and I was like, God. but it woke me up. I'll tell you. that. So that's like Underberg you said. I mean, I enjoy those for the fact they not, they're not taste great, but their effect is fantastic. A heartburn or digestive. Yeah. It's really good for that. is a lot more, we're getting way off, hand top of here, but Underberg is a lot more bitter. Um, but That's why they give you a tiny bottle. Like Honestly, Fett is for what it is. It's more balanced and I can, there's a, there's on occasion now I'll drink it. Neat. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, you're a psycho. I am. I I might be a sociopath. that, That's like the, uh, the psychiatrist, like top five. list of sociopathy is, yeah. Number two is like you, they enjoy fret straight. Number one is mylo. So Yeah. let's try a little bit of that bean product you got there. Jordan, while we're doing that, I'm gonna talk a little bit more about mellow corn. So in 2014, that's when Mellow corn kind of came. Was reinvented again. Became a cult hit. That's when bourbon really started to get serious. People got a little more pretentious with all the bourbon, all the bourbon talk. And then people were reaching for this as like that counterculture. Right, exactly. Like, hey, give us this. So that's when it really got, so it's not allocated, not as serious Bartenders and hipsters led the charge. Right. Um, from that they actually have their own Instagram page. So Meor has their own Correct. They have over 6,000 followers. Thank you. That's pretty That's pretty awesome. awesome. Um, there's actually, you, you talked about this ball like a, a corn cob, right? Yeah. There's a dude online, Richard, I think is his name. He's actually, he was in a group we were in and he, uh, he would go on there and drink Melo corn, dressed up as like a farmer or dressed up as a corn cob. I kept thinking, man, this is awesome. He's actually on a Reddit thread that he's on. There's a Miller Corn Reddit thread. And he's on there all the time, dressed up and all this stuff like a corn cob pipe and drinking milk. It's, it's actually hilarious. Really No, That's the right top. We're just gonna leave that on there. yeah, it's close enough. I was putting it on there like that was gonna go, I was like, what wrong with So the label is yellow with like a little touch of red and green. If you go to Heaven Hill gift shop though. They have, I would say a third of their merch is mellow corn. Like there's a it's like got a cult. status now, well, it also looks like their shirts, the most iconic shirt I see is like a, almost a mountain dew faded green with like mellow corn on it. They've got hats of different ones. Um, quite a bit of space again, at, at the gift shop. Has a lot of things there, but you know. the price I think really helps bring it to that kind of cult following, you percent. I mean, this t-shirt does look very cool. It's the coolest t-shirt, heaven Hill makes for Well, and That's another point I wanted to make with that. The label, the packaging itself, I think it's really nostalgic and, uh, I think it holds like, uh, you know, a lot of pe it's that familiar hug, you know? Yeah, yeah. yeah. If they updated that packaging, it would probably, kill apart. Yeah. Why, why would you ever yeah. I mean, it looks like it's something out of the seventies, you know? Like it hasn't changed in, that's only, that was only 30 years ago. I Well, I hear the, uh, marketing, I hear the marketing guy for a Cracker barrels looking for a new job. So, uh, Tell them to uh, not, not hire, him. I think, I think honestly like Kevin Hiller bald in bro bond product. I don't think the new label on that is nearly as nice as the old label. That's simplistic. The six year bald in bond, the white label like that was, that was a great, didn't they had the green one, that old style bourbon riding. It's pretty cool. So what do you think of this one we're drinking? What's the proof on this one, Jordan? This One's 1 0 6. I do believe it's 11 years old. Uh, this one is, uh, started in, uh, second use, uh, oak barrels, and then it's finished in a toasted barrel. Remember what you told me before about what it tastes like, the tasting notes? Yeah. That's all I get now. now. And we actually had a conversation about this yesterday. about food pairings, and it's when you hear people talk about their tasting notes, it almost kind of infects your own process. So now I'm thinking like, you was his tasty note? Lemon pound cake, lemon pound cake. kind of Like um, like kind of thing. So what's the price on this one? You said I, I apologize, I missed up the Hardening Creek. Yeah, they're not say, but No, so no, no. over a hundred over a hundred let's Well, so knowing that that is just as good for around $20. That was 130 to 140. do think that one's better, but is it that it's not three, it's not even three times as as good. You know what I mean? So better. it's of crazy when you think about, it. You put it in I mean, it is 11 years old, and that's probably right at four. But They're, they're, pulling that four, four years of one day you like, Well, you know, you know, what you do is once you finish the Hardin's Creek is pour. corn and just pour it in there. it, take it Around to special occasions like this and you know, They're like, damn, this Jordan guy's. Nice. He's sharing this hundred. Yeah, just one after another We need to start. doing, you Remember the Rudy Cornin Yeah. Yeah. with the, the wine scammer? We need to, We need to just get a whole bunch of like really nice empty bottles and put milk corn in all of 'em. And have people like, tell us all their different tasting notes, like comparing 'em and we need something to make it just a shade darker. Maybe there's a black label we can put on the back side of a coloring, maybe Hershey's syrup. It is like shaking up. really hard. I get a chocolate, it's a little chocolate note Yeah. That's how you know it's good. That's, from, uh, the extra years it spent at sea. Uh, Be that'd be a funny uh, video idea. of people that's never, been on the podcast It actually would be, you know what really is. aged at sea? Never say, never say yeah. Our sponsor, our glorious, beautiful sponsor, never say die whiskey. You can find it at a liquor store near you. Possibly, um, we still haven't ascertained how widely this is distributed, so hopefully you can can, it is in Georgetown. I saw it really it's in Kentucky. It's in Liquor Barns. Bigger stores. I think I saw a rye whiskey at my local. liquor They have the rye and then the bourbon's, the ones I've seen so far. I, I thought they had a single barrel at some point, but I've not seen it again. check it out. It's d just, Uh, our fans in South Africa probably cannot get it. Um, did you know our podcast was like number 13 in South Africa for like two overall? That's Matt Jones is. right now is uh, Johannesburg. Yeah. Maybe we'll get a little little bump here with him. That's pretty cool. I, I read, I think I saw a video somewhere. Maybe it was the NSD video where they said that they, initially it was intended for an English Yeah. Like audience. Yeah. Which thought was interesting. We do have some, we do have, or you have some fans in, in, uh, in England. Yeah. I do. you? Well, no, mentally, like my, my, my I remember there was like, uh, yeah. Who watch. Yeah. he did, he did say Jason. Sorry, I, I meant to do like this, but I gave you just one. Yeah. Yeah. yeah. I wonder if the English, uh, audience likes Meow corn? will soon, because what we're gonna do, we're gonna, actually, if you hear me splashed around over here, I'm gonna make their, I guess, most iconic drink with this called the Golden Derby. It is one and a half ounces of me corn, one and a half ounces of ginger lur, and then two ounces of grapefruit juice. I mean, that already sounds amazing. in England it's pronounced Darby, but Okay. It's, it'd be a Golden Darby. Yeah, you was crazy. Um, nevermind, I can't get into this because it involves some proprietary uh, in information, so yeah, I'm gonna cut that. out. Now leave it in. So where did you, uh, where did you hear about this drink? Just kind of doing So honestly, when you're, when you're doing research, if you go to the website of Heaven Hill and in the Reddit thread, either one, you have this recipe on there, like it's, it's the first recipe. They also do an old fashioned, but somebody forgot the bitters. I guess it was you, man. It wasn't me that Yeah, I forgot the bitters at Jason's house. All right, so now we need four ounces of grapefruit juice, and then I'll let Max shake the shit up. Does it need to be pink grapefruit or A hundred percent. Gotta gotta be peak. I don't, I don't know Well, it's gotta be ruby red. Ruby red cocktail. uh, juice grab. Drew I want, yeah, I want the ocean spray. Ruby To be fair, Jason. I don't think a mellow corn old fashioned would be that much different than uh, it'd be the same thing, old fashion. It'd be maybe a little bit sweeter, less spicy Than using a regular. bourbon, with that. with Yeah. Or like a rye. I like a rye in my old Yeah. did too. I think, I think most mixed drinks I make with bourbon in 'em are, well, that would require bourbon. I, I prefer rye. A little spicier. All right, Matt, you're a shaker. You want Go put some ice. in real quick? I remember back uh, when I was younger, my favorite mixed drink was a screwdriver. That's, that's orange juice and vodka. We learned about that the other day. Do, do you, what do you think about non-alcoholic screwdrivers? it's called orange juice. Orange. Just orange juice. You know, I'm not on the non-alcoholic train. myself. Uh, No, but ever, have you ever done like a, isn't the, the Harvey Wallbanger where you have, you add a gallo to that? Isn't that what that is? I've heard that. I've heard that a but I don't know it. plus Gallo, What's a gano? What is It comes in like a really tall Yeah, and it's like a triangular shape. It's like bottle. It's like a very cool looking bottle. Yeah. yellow also. You've 100% seen. It's in, it's in every But what Kind of lit? LA liquor, almond, I guess just, oh yeah. I think one what's the number one? almond. laco. Almond. one. Yeah, I thought A moretto. Yeah. Yeah. I I thought maybe I'm clearly wrong on this, but I think that's a Harvey Wallbanger though. What do you think of Lemon Cello? A A what? Lemon cello. I do like lemon Not a lemon cello. If I don't like it? I gave you my bottle, I Oh. Um, Kendra came back from Italy and she said that's all, all they drink up there. That's That's, yeah. And that, I mean I bet that shit's good Everybody Line up your NSD cups. You know, you were talking about, uh, what was it, Miller Uh, Miller High Life and Miller Corn. What was that called? Like a, That is called High in Mellow. Wow. So that's, that's corn on top of corn. It It You know, Corn Lager. Corn, uh, I'm a Miller Life fan. I'm a Miller product fan. I think overall for Macro, that's my go-to for sure. Around pass them around. also, it's called the Golden Derby, and on our cup from NSD, it's the Nashville Derby. Yeah. Which we just did an event over there, um, and we lost a bunch of money, so it was fun. Mm-hmm. Cheers Fells. Cheers, man. Wait, what is this called? Golden Derby. Golden Derby. Yeah. Yeah. We call it the pink Derby since I got meat and grapefruit juice. Yeah, I I mean, it's pretty solid. I'd probably do a touch less uh, ginger. I'd do more grapefruit or well, the Ginger pretty much overtakes the milk, corn, This one, Well, grapefruits awesome It's, honestly, it's equal parts. Milk, corn and ginger, which is pretty strong on the ginger. Yeah, it is. It's, it's definitely got a lot more flavor. Um, if I was gonna make one of these and I like I, this tastes delicious. I think it's a great. Drink that for like warmer weather. on the rocks, Oh. But, but after the first one that I drank, I would probably double the mellow corn to the ginger. Easy. Easy. A hundred percent is what I would do. I think this might actually benefit from some bitters also, which you don't have. Thanks a lot Yeah. You're supposed to bring those. Yeah. I think a few dashes of bitters actually be great. in this. I wonder how, I wonder what reg can you find regular grapefruit juice? Only thing I could find was pink. That's 'cause the regular grapefruit juice sucks. Like it's terrible. It's Regular grapefruit pink? No, it's like white. Oh ruby. That's what this is. That's what this is? Yeah. I mean, this I don't know where you guys are shopping. this is by, Wal, at Walmart In Georgetown. There's only one color. grape. Huh? Jordan's like, is it produced by Pepsi Cola. Because I haven't heard of it. If it isn't how far the superior grapefruit juice. I would, I would agree with that, but I just wondered what, 'cause that's bitter in itself more bitter than the pink. that ginger makes it. Yeah, the gingers too much. I'd have, I'd have to go. So it's one and a half ounces, the bell corn, one and a half ounces of ginger. I would go. I might go 0.75 ginger, like I don't think it needs. yeah, you need to do two to one. Yeah, me What, what was The other drink that we were, going to so it was called a corn whiskey, old fashion. I mean, simple enough. So two ounce milk, corn, simple syrup, dash of bitters and orange twist. I mean, you know, I guess we'll never, ever get to try that one. We Just won't No, I won't send you home with my bottle of milk coin. I'm gonna keep that. Honestly, though, dude, I can't. afford to, buy one of those I think. I think if you have a home bar, I would recommend always keeping a ball of that on there. Shit. I mean, that's pretty good. Yeah. gives you a street edge to your whiskey collection. Oh, This guy. has me corn. Street edge. You get a ball of cream to demand to keep on there too, if you really want. I'd Be Like I thought you were, a pretentious prick. but then I saw that mell of corn and I realized you're a grounded individual. Yeah. You know what's up. Yeah. No, I, I'm the same with you. Once we started kind of looking up and, or realizing how this has a cult following, we wanna do like a little short episode on it. I was like, I think I'm just gonna keep a bottle. I mean, it's a legit a bourbon if they've used first, um, use casks instead of the second use. So that's the difference. You know, You know what's pretty cool is they might have. Bulk ordered those labels back in the seventies. and are, They're still using these. for same ones. ones. Yeah, why the price of the bottle's only 20 bucks. Right now, I think I'm actually gonna go to a Heaven Hill next time in there and buy me a milk corn. Corn shirt. You need a bottle of your own uh, bottle of Milk corn in what they need. Dude. You know we talked about doing t-shirts. I think one of the first ones we actually do is gonna be that label, but it's gonna say arsenic culture I, I actually like that a think that'd Be badass. We'll get a cease and desist. That's cool. That makes our name I know. yeah. We just gotta sell as many as we can. like Four. before they tell us to stop. Yeah. Oh, Hope they're already in distributions. Sorry. I can't get those four Back. They'll be limited, limited. Edition collector items and They'll be worth even more on the secondary 50 back and list them On Yeah, just on secondary. Yeah. Well, you know, I feel like there's been some growth in those more bottom shelf and we like did a show on it too, but there's been some growth in that bottom shelf bourbons and whiskeys where like the benchmarks that are, you know, the same similar mash bills that, yeah. That, that people are, you know, gravitating toward because they're not bad products for the price that you get, Well, you look in the last year, they've brought two things back to, or put an age statement on 'em. So you have the old granddad, 7-year-old, bald and bond. Then you have the old Fitzgerald, I think it's still 7-year-old too. So it's bottom shelf, but they've made the packaging better and increased the price to 40 to $55. Right? So they're making a good profit, but the bottle's cool as hell. I mean, it's a nice, both, a nice bottle, but that differs in this situation to where they have not increased the package. No, the. price, they have not changed the packaging. Um, I, this is like, this is the equivalent of like the Costco hotdog. Like it's just gonna stay the same price and it should be. And I think as long as it will, it will stay popular. The minute they try to adapt it to The evolving market is the second that it's gonna lose favor. But here's the thing, the reason this has gotten so popular is because bourbon got stupid. You know, people, you said it earlier, it's just kind of like the snobbery of it. Yeah. Everybody just wants like the high end stuff. Like who's gonna go fucking buy a bottle of. Hardened Creek? Uh, what is this? Golden origins, one sucker. guy, which this is great. This is great by the I needed those points. Yeah. Yeah. but I mean, it, it, it kind, of, it's everything. It, it's ev a lot of industries, industries are like that, you know, it ends up just kind of like circling back and it's like, let's stay in tune with our roots and now it becomes like the next PBR I'D also, call it, we'll call it $18, so a sub 20 for a baldin bond, a hundred proof product. I don't know if there's better out there. I'm just being honest right now. I don't know that there is. I'd be, I'd be interested to taste it side by side Maybe a benchmark, maybe a I Heaven Hill. That's, that's done the old Heaven Hill. I bet. I bet that's better. But still, But I like to taste 'em side by side, you know, like see. Yeah. I think it's a good experiment to do, I could probably drink that old thing one night if I really wanted. to. I mean, That's, that's good stuff And then, too. and then you're gonna do Challenge the boys. I go, I'll go buy another now. Yeah. And then we gotta do the bottle yeah, Jordan's gonna be the start of the hangover episode in the morning. We're we're, done. I uss gonna try the Hangover. uh, recipes. be sitting there in the morning with a bottle, Jordan, any of this working Yeah. He's like, no. Gimme more meco man. If You stay hungover, You ain't gotta get hungover. That's what I good point. you mean You stay drunk. We say drunk. Uh, yeah. So that's it, man. We, uh, that's, that's the kind of the story behind Mel Corn. You're going, to, you've probably seen it around it's actually good stuff. Like don't, don't skip on it. Don't sleep on it. Yeah.
